For the longest time, I didn’t watch tv. We ditched cable about two years ago and I honestly didn’t miss it. We would go out to watch sports games and go to the movie theatre for date nights. Our main reason for downloading the app on our phones was to have cartoons for Cassidy to watch. Of course, our phones led to our smart tv and the rest is history.
Both Darrin and I love watching shows and specials that are Netflix exclusives. I love finding shows and binging them when I have some time. Getting to see our favorite comedians have standup specials has been cool also.
2020 provided us a lot of time to watch every single thing on Netflix and I feel pretty confident that I have an awesome list to share with you all.
What do I recommend on Netflix?
Seven Seconds
This show is based on a mother who loses her son when he is accidentally struck by a police vehicle. The accident is covered up and there is a ton of drama and suspense as the details come to light.
The Irishman
A crime film based on the book, I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt. It is about a truck driver who becomes a hit man for the mob. It is a long movie, so grab your snacks but I seriously promise you it is worth every minute.
Manhunt: Deadly Games
This is the second season of the series Manhunt. It follows the hunt for the Centennial Olympic Park bomber Eric Rudolph. It is so good. I have no other words.
Immigration Nation
A documentary that shows the state of the U.S. immigration system and the ICE operation and immigration enforcement. It shows the barriers that migrants face by trying to enter the United States from Mexico. It is eye opening and grabs at your heart.
Cobra Kai
This is the sequel to the Karate Kid films. So it is a drama that focuses on martial arts. I was never a karate kid fan, but this series is really good. A lot of action and suspense.
When They See Us
I am sure most of you are familiar with this series based on the Central Park 5. It is based on the Central Park jogger case and shows the lives of the five male suspects who were falsely accused and imprisoned.
Mind Hunter
This series is based on the book, Mins Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker. The series shows how the FBI and a clinical psychologist interview imprisoned serial killers to understand how they think in order to apply the knowledge to current cases. I found this so interesting.
Making a Murderer
This is another popular one, but it’s a true crime documentary that follows the story of two men accused of a crime that they may not have committed. The amount of time that this series covers is incredible.
Unbelievable
This show is about a girl who is accused of lying about a rape and how it affects her life. Two detectives begin noticing similar attacks and begin linking the cases.
Luke Cage
This show is based on the Marvel comic, which isn’t something I would normally watch. But it shows Luke Cage, an ex-con who is trying to clear his name and protect his neighborhood.
The Get Down
Don’t let the fact that the show was cancelled after the first season deter you. Especially if you are interested in New York and Hip Hop’s origin. The setting is in the South Bronx in the late 1970’s. A young poet who lives with his aunt and uncle makes his way and forms a band. His girlfriend also pursues her dreams to become a disco singer while battling her religious father.
Lenox Hill
A documentary on four doctors who work at New York City’s Lenox Hill Hospital. It shows how they balance personal life and quality care for their patients.
Raising Dion
This is another superhero drama that I absolutely love. It’s based on a mother who is trying to figure out the cause of her son’s new powers. His father/her husband passed away and she uncovers details that explain more of what is going on with her son.
Diagnosis
A documentary where Dr. Lisa Sanders crowdsourced diagnoses for rare and mysterious medical conditions. Each episode is a new patient. The show is like House but in real life, it’s so good.
The I-Land
This show is about a group of people who wake up on a beach of an island with no memory of who they are or how they got there. Similar to Lord of the Flies, drama ensues as they all try to survive the experiment.
13th
This is a documentary that explores mass incarceration in the United States and how racial inequalities prove to be a larger part of the problem.
All American
This show is about a football player who is recruited to Beverly Hills high-school from South Los Angeles. the rivalry and the difference in upbringings make this show really interesting.
Dear White People
Several black college students at a predominately white Ivy League college navigate race relations in America.
Ozark
A family relocated to escape money laundering but ends up in a bigger money laundering operation. They get involved with local criminals and the situation gets even more dramatic.
The Innocence Files
A documentary about the innocence project which works to exonerate wrongly convicted prisoners. The project aims to reform the criminal justice system as well.
Captive
This documentary is about historic high stakes hostage situations and how they are negotiated around the world. Each episode is about another incident and they are all good.
The Pharmacist
A pharmacist who loses his son in a drug related shooting begins to seek answers from police and unravels the extent of the opioid epidemic in his town.
The Haunting of Hill House
Now I would be lying if I said this show was my idea. I do not handle horror well. So I watched between my fingers. But it was super intense and suspenseful. The show is about a family with memories that haunt them and between the past and present. So crazy.
My Next Guest
This is a different pick than all of the rest. It is David Letterman’s special where he interviews celebrities in a live talk show style. Personally I believe he is a genius and I have enjoyed all of the interviews. Pick and choose your favorite to watch, but I 10/10 recommend.
