Cassidy started kindergarten last week and I have to admit, I was really nervous and felt a tad unprepared. We were really lucky that she was not attending a new school since her current Montessori started a kindergarten program last year. However, I was really used to being able to drop her off and pick her up on my own time, not at a scheduled time. That’s been a little rough.
Cassidy is our first baby (well, big girl now) so this is our first rodeo with back to school. I relied really heavily on my mama community and the advice they shared with me to ease my anxiety and steer me in the right direction. I figured I would pass down that advice in case you haven’t found a tribe and you need the advice like I did.
If you want to be successful, you need to do the prep work!
I don’t know about you but, I often say, “I’ll just do it in the morning.” I leave things for the morning and then hit snooze and panic so I can get out of the door on time. Don’t do that. Prep everything the night before. Pack the lunches, set out the clothes, and organize the backpacks. If you do the lunches the night before you can just grab from the fridge and go, instead of trying to balance keeping the kids on time while being in the kitchen. It gets Cassidy involved in choosing her outfit, which she loves to do, but it also makes the clothes accessible in the morning so they can get dressed on their own. Cassidy is getting into the routine of brushing her teeth and putting on her clothes while I am getting dressed. So helpful!

Bonus points: Go the extra mile and prep your own lunches or even dinners to help the evening run smoother. Because if there is one thing I learned after last week, time flies in the evening!
Be consistent with the morning routine, just like you are at bedtime!
This is a hard one, I am trying to break a really bad habit of staying up late and sleeping way too long in the mornings. Regardless, the more consistent a routine the smoother it runs. It instills values in your kids of discipline and accountability. Make time for breakfast and self-care. I try to do Cassidy’s hair each day for school in a fun style to get her excited to go. I bought her pretty hair bows and clips that she can mix and match. A friend of mine and fellow content creator mentioned choosing a hairstyle for the week that transitions easily into another style. It limits the amount of time it takes to style. A really important part of staying consistent in the mornings is so you get to school on time. I want to show Cassidy that it is important to arrive on time and respect other people’s time. This is the first place she will experience that and her routine will help her form habits, good and bad.
Boost those immune systems!
Going back to school after last year’s chaos is difficult. I know everyone has their own views on the situation but one thing we can agree on is keeping our kids healthy. Reiterate the importance of handwashing to your children. You can pack mini hand sanitizers with them. Cassidy likes having her own. Make sure they are getting enough sleep at night. Cassidy goes to bed between 8-9 pm. That’s the sweet spot for her. Find a good supplement and make it a part of your daily routine. I wish I could say that Cassidy gets enough nutrients from her food alone, but she is a really picky eater so I supplement just in case.
Lastly, just take a deep breath. I got through it and so will you. Back to school isn’t for the weak, especially when you have multiple kids to coordinate for.
