I would be lying if I said that I knew a ton about Advent Calendars. We never had one as a kid, so I was completely influenced by the social space to incorporate this activity into this year’s Christmas countdown. I am curious how many people grew up with the Advent calendar in their home. Maybe you can teach me a few things.

I wanted this year to be a year to remember for Cassidy, and not just because she had to wear a mask wherever she went. A few things that this year has taught me is the importance of family and gratitude. This year we will be spending as much time together as we can, so bring on all of the activities.

A little background for those who may need it (me), Advent is period of four Sundays leading up until Christmas. It is most commonly celebrated December 1st until Christmas Day. It is meant to prepare us for the real meaning of Christmas, and that is the birth of Jesus. Originally just paper calendars, it has morphed into miniature gifts given each day leading up until Christmas. We can probably agree that although creative, this strays from the reason for the season reminder intended by the Advent season.

With that being said, I really wanted to focus on quality time within this Advent calendar activity. Every family is different, but for me, I opted for a calendar that would be a different story for each day.

There are a few ways you can do this:

  • Book basket – filled with a story for each night leading up until Christmas. You can either wrap each book in fun wrapping paper or just leave them be.
  • Book shelf – with cardstock and ribbon tag each book with a number and read according to number order. You can get creative with your Cricut or some construction paper and other supplies.
  • Purchase a pre-made Advent Calendar – I have seen tons of cute ones online depending on your child’s favorite characters, colors etc.

As you can guess, I definitely purchased a pre-made Advent calendar. Honestly, I had planned 100% to do a book basket using used books that I have purchased for Christmas time. Then I went into TJ Maxx and saw a giant Frozen Advent calendar with stories inside. If anyone knows my daughter, she is Frozen obsessed (like any other little girl). See her Frozen room transformation HERE.

I showed it to her last night and she is over the moon excited to read the first book. Here are a few more Advent calendars that I think are adorable.

The perfect Advent Calendar for this holiday season.

Now I am curious, does your family do an Advent Calendar in December? If so, is it traditional or modern?
